As the war of words propels itself throughout cyberspace re the revelations whistle blower Edward Snowdon has made public; those who are at the coal face of carefully reporting the releases, are under attack. One of those, Glen Greenwald, has come out with a response which all who stand in the shadows and reads such information, should in turn read this response.
Even here in Australia, famous opinion based journalists such as Andrew Bolt and his views become suspect in light of the expose’. Democracy is about freedom, but more importantly about doing it right, just, and transparently.
For me personally as an Investigator; no unlimited spying is able to be sanctioned without true justification. Military to military spying has always been, but Snowden’s revelations and those flagged as yet to follow, smack of so much more than that. So I leave you all with the link to Greenwald’s (right) response to attacks upon him and his colleagues. Your views are your views alone and the great thing about democracy is that you are allowed to have a view, but never can that view be made nor have veracity, unless you are privy to all sides.
Consider the issues in light of the commercial world. If you were a corporate entity and you conducted your actions as Snowden’s revelations unquestionably expose; then you as the entity and its execs, would suffer under the laws of most of the world and be punished for Industrial Espionage. In this day of almost unfettered globalisation; private contracting to governments; dishonesty in power; how is such unfettered spying to be considered as any different.
Further; while the NSA tell Americans it does not disseminate that found on its own subjects, who stops the Australians spying on the English; the English on the Americans and the New Zealanders on the Canadians etc? Then such collected information is passed covertly on to the home countries and all safe-guards potentially become negated.
When society transgresses upon its friends and neighbours; its visitors and citizens where only the elite are privy; we have reached dangerous times indeed. Times where Edward Snowden being aware of so much more than has been released; obeyed the Nuremburg protocol and stood for all society at his own life’s cost to tell the truth to the world.
