The wildfires that incinerated the Tangtangara area of the Southern Snowy Mountains burnt more than terrain ineptly managed by the NPWS under the control of Debus, Corbyn and Fleming, the NSW managing team of Iemma's for our environment.

With the recent wildfire racing across the snowy plains, plains allowed to be over grown 90% with heath scrub and needle bush, orders were given for back burns to be lit in a purported effort to contain the fire.

People with decades of experience and knowledge of this terrain and fire control are aghast at the massive destruction that ensued and are incensed at the wildlife decimation.

Brumbies especially were burnt to death and it is anecdotally considered that the loss of life to the Brumbies and other wildlife was due to the incredibly large and encircling nature of the back burns lit.

These man-induced conflagrations entirely encircle all that was within the unburnt fire ground and reached such heat intensity that in some areas the place is a moonscape. There was absolutely no thought given to the wildlife that were entrapped within and hence the horrific burns received resulted in terrible death and suffering unnecessarily.

The National Parks and Wildlife were forced to enter the fire ground after the fire and shoot at least 7 known brumbies with horrendous burns and 3 of these had broken limbs.

This is totally unacceptable. Brumbies are able to easily run all but the most horrendous firestorms, storms yet to be seen and yet in this Snowy Mountain holocaust that knows how many were forced to be burnt at the NPWS stake.

There was no exit allowed for the wildlife and if the NPWS had learned anything from our Aboriginal cousins, they would have known that you NEVER EVER encircle with fire. They used fire to push their prey through a gap that allowed them to successfully hunt food. The NPWS should have left a gap to allow all animals an exit strategy, but instead, they burnt them. How many, we have yet to hear the assessment.

This fire, above all other travesties against our high country is a scientists lollipop shop, for the evidence is there for all to see, but I bet all the scorched carcasses that the NPWS could find have been removed.

The Royal commission that has been called for into the wildfire mitigation processes and the Fleming run NPWS can never come soon enough, and there is no doubt that if Iemma is returned to power, such an Inquiry or anything like it will never see the light of day. There has to be a change and on the 24th of this month you have that opportunity and ability to see that this actually come about.
