My Say

Our Pilot-less large model Spy Airplane has been on some interesting flights over the past week.

Did you know that NSW National Parks CEO, Dr Tony Fleming's holiday home on the south coast - need a coat of paint on the roof.

Did you know that the fuel loads on government land south of Sydney is enough to generate a blast furnace as the summer draws near.

Next issue will be published on Wednesday 29th August 2007.

Double Standards of Political Jousting in the ACT.

I hate to agree with Mayor Stanhope, but there are many Chinese leather workers screaming out for product to make car seat covers out of roo skin leather to sell back to us and here the ACT has an over abundance of the stuff in the thousands, being carefully maintained in good order by the current occupants of the skins.

Having said that, it is a bit rich of the Mayor and his government to be wasting millions of dollars needed for hospitals and the elderly etc, on propping up a struggling mill that is in financial dire straits, when he has billions of dollars of burnt mountain ash sitting on the hillside looking down upon the mill rotting away increasing the solid fuel load beyond anything previously experienced in colonisation, just waiting for the next man made holocaust to burn the arse out of Canberra and its citizenry. Give the mill the rights to enter without question and mill the standing burnt dead trees.

After the Caledonian fires of 1939, mills were processing the burnt mountain ash timber for some 20 years after that fire. What a crock of %&$@# our entire bevy of politicians are. We elect them to represent us in leadership and they all just scam the public and feed their corporate buddies whom they retire from politics to, and in the process, wittingly kill the golden Australian dream, along with its proud history.

For the record mountain ash timber is premium in quality and the stands of ghost trunks by the millions is a disgrace to the government, bureaucracy and the green movement. Every day these trees are left to the winds, the billions of dollars in value decreases.

'POLITICAL' REFUSAL TO CULL MAY BE REFERRED TO DPP

The ACT Government have asked the Government Solicitor whether Commonwealth inaction on kangaroo overpopulation on two Defence sites should be referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, amid growing fears that the Federal Government is stalling on a cull until after the upcoming federal election.

Licences to cull on the site were issued two months ago but Defence has so far neglected to fulfill its obligations as set out in those licences.

"It would be disgraceful if it emerged that the Federal Government was prepared to deliberately put at greater risk a number of endangered species at these two vulnerable Defence sites, simply to avoid having to display some courage and proceed with a cull in the lead-up to an election," Chief Minister Jon Stanhope said today.

The Chief Minister said he had received no response to his urgent requests to both the Minister for Defence, Dr Brendan Nelson, and the Minister for Environment, Malcolm Turnbull, for details of precisely how the Federal Government proposed to meet its legal obligations.

Correspondence at officer level revealed that the Department of Defence had established an expert panel to look at kangaroo management options on the sites. That panel was due to report to the Secretary of the Department of Defence last Saturday.

"I would be loath to think that the establishment of the panel was simply a contrivance by the Commonwealth to delay a cull until after the forthcoming federal election," Mr Stanhope said, "but all the signs point to this being a political, rather than a scientific response.

"Defence was intimately involved in the development of the rigorous science that recommended a cull on the two sites as the most humane and effective way to prevent further overgrazing, potential starvation of kangaroos, and damage to the fragile ecosystems that support a number of endangered species of flora and fauna. All that science pointed to a need to cull - a response accepted by the RSPCA, the flora and fauna advisory group and numerous experts in ecology.

"In accordance with best practice, it was determined - and initially accepted by the Commonwealth - that the cull ought ideally take place by the end of July. That significant date was based on animal welfare. It seems it has now been superseded by a different 'significant date', some time in October or November, driven by political considerations."

Mr Stanhope called on the Commonwealth to publicly release the advice of its expert panel.

Gestapo Hunts for Jews

Again we see the NSW State Gestapo using their skills in attacking a private contractor for an incident that put silt in the Snowy River and upset the town folk for a period, when such work was being conducted for the betterment of the river and the environment.

Koperberg is proving to be a chip off the old block of his close buddy, Federal aspirant, Bob Debus. Who by the way has gone from dictating on the environment to addressing his sought after Federal constituents on the art of rural dentistry.

The below story excerpt from the ABC shows just how Reich Master Koperberg is going to rule.

Is this going to be a revisit of the Transgrid fiasco that saw Transgrid fined in the millions for clearing beneath the NSW Power Grid lines, an action that only weeks later saved NSW metropolitan areas from massive blackouts during the 2003 holocaust, a holocaust, where Reich master Koperberg was at the time, commissioner of the NSW Rural Fire Service. This legal flexing of the Bureaucrats wings at taxpayers expense was indirectly involved in the sad death of a contractor.

Is Herr Koperberg going to lay charges against the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Services, his own department, and the private landowner for the environmental destruction caused to the Towamba River system in near Kiah, in the Bega area, after the expected NSW NPWS environmental mythology collapsed and caused an environmental tragedy?

No we bet not, but he sure is going after some other poor sod that doesn't have the resources of yours and mine tax dollars to squander.

Charges laid over Snowy River silt spill

ABC -Online

Court charges have been laid over a big silt spill into the Snowy River last year.

The New South Wales Department of Environment and Climate Change has begun prosecutions against the Snowy Hydro Corporation and one of its contractors it says were responsible for the spill late in July last year.

It says the removal of a coffer dam used during the construction of a new spillway at the Jindabyne Dam caused the Snowy River to become polluted with sediment.

Downstream, the river was turned yellow and Dalgety's water supply had to be shut down and people along the river were warned against pumping water for weeks until the pollution eased.

The president of the Snowy River Alliance, John Gallard, says it took a big release of water from the Jindabyne Dam weeks later to flush the river clean.

"It was an obvious silt load in the river for three weeks after the event and after the flushing flow. It would have probably set the river back a couple of years in terms of its return to some sort of former environmental value," he said.

The alliance has welcomed the announcement that court charges have been laid.

Mr Gallard says that the impact on the health of the river was significant.

"We saw some fish, small fish that were affected by it, but most of the wildlife that would have been affected were the micro fauna. These are the small organisms that live on the bed of the stream or in the crevices or cracks in the rocks," he said.

The Environment Department says both Snowy Hydro and the contractor, the FRH Group, would face charges of breaching sections of the Protection of the Environment Act.

The charges are listed for mention in court on September 14 2007.

Kill'em, Don't Save Them

The tiny little non by-lined postage stamp sized story below from The Land is one that belies the importance of the events of the last few months there and elsewhere in this State.

It is incredulous in this day and age where our Federal Government has surplus of billions, State government has no shortage of tax dollars to squander on quassi police, that those very financial resources, in fact only part thereof, could not be used to purchase emergency stock feed aid to the very farmers that are in need of it.

The cost of the obviously intense scrutiny and inspections carried out by the teams as mentioned in the below Land account clearly would far and exceed the emergency aid this farmer required to get this stock through a rough patch.

Why is that a DPI Inspector, or an RLPB Ranger that's sees, or responds to a complaint does not have the authority to case assess and make recommendations for remediation feeding of such conditioned stock and instead of trying to feed starving stock with negotiations (never heard of words alleviating hunger) just arrange the necessary feed.

There are starting to appear some startling parallels to the Federal Governments responses to inadequate State management of Services and Resources towards Aboriginal people and their communities as there is to the needy in our rural farming society.

No one condones animal cruelty as a premeditated act, and the RSPCA was a volunteer group that came about to address such cruelty, but it appears that the savior is fast becoming the perpetrator under the guise of animal welfare.

A bushfire sweeps the bush and mega dollars are spent on trying to save burnt animals and rehabilitate them back to nature. Quite simply, animals that should be put down, but all stops are pulled from every quarter to save them, including the media attention.

Find a farmer struggling against all odds and the only dollars to spent to solve the problem is upon wages, vehicles, administration, labour, lawyers and finally ammunition to destroy animals, where in the story below such animals were identified by the authorities as in need some 8 months prior to culling. Whose perpetrating cruelty?

While the RSPCA lauds its self to the city folk on TV with heroic stories of saving kittens in drainpipes, and the media are there to record and display the effort and expense expended, the hard pressed and yes maybe self brought about, farmer is denigrated, destroyed, charged and deprived the very same care, concern, compassion and social responses.

Don't expect us here at SOS-NEWS to pay homage and credit to the many wings of the NSW State Government's quassi police forces for actions that had many other options.

Simply put in legal terms, "What would any fair and reasonable man do?" Feed the bloody animals, not shoot them, nor leave them starving stock for 8 months so they were so bad that shooting was now suddenly kind and clear justification for human persecution. But hey they are not a burnt wombat, or a legless lizard, or a corroboree frog are they. No, no votes in that for us are there, the greens want all these hard hoofed animals be-gone and they hold the balance or our power at the next elections.

Just 12 cattle in need.

Cattle Destroyed by RSPCA

The Land August 23rd 2007

RSPCA Inspectors last week shot 12 head of cattle kept on a Woodenbong property in the far north east of the state, saying eight months of negotiations had failed to halt the deteriorating condition of the animals.

The Inspectors, along with Rural Land Protection Board and NSW Department of Primary Industries livestock advisers and a team of police officers, had attended the property six times since February, before the decision was made to destroy the malnourished beasts last week.

ACT not just a Territory

With Heroine Coroner Doogan soon to be dragged once again through the ACT Courts at tax payer's expense for standing up against the political and bureaucratic bully boys, the ACT Shire Council with Mayor Jon Stanhope are still arrogantly giving everybody the royal finger in regard to implementing that which was decided must be.

4 years after the fires swept into the Nation's Capital and took lives needlessly, Mayor Jon Stanhope is still displaying an indecisive leadership capability that he so aptly displayed, January 2003.

Constitutionally, the land area occupied by the Australian Capital Territory is land that belongs to all Australians and hence all events, incidents, shenanigans and ineptness is of most importance to all Australian citizens, much to the Chagrin of the Mayor and his councillors.

It is time the Federal Minister for Territories stepped in and cleaned up the mess and upheld all that Coroner Doogan found by a fair and transparent judicial Inquiry, and relegated the Mayor and his lackeys back to Council status and redirected the billion dollar show casing of the Territory to areas of need immediately. The homeless need new cardboard boxes, for their old homes are soggy from the climate changing rains.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I do not remember a referendum of the Nation giving Federal Parliament permission, yes permission, to change our constitution by the acceptance of the three acts they have passed illegally so as to water down the people's rights clearly protected by the founding framers of the Constitution of the Commonwealth. In fact our founding framers of our constitution clearly debated the effect of law should it be Ultra Vires (beyond the powers) and agreed that acquiescence to such law would only allow such law to have force until the day such law/laws were attacked. Wonder where that leaves the Westminster, UK and Australia Acts illegally implemented to dilute the constitution without referenda consultation with the Commonwealth's citizens, as is required?

As an aside people, all sides of government know they are and have been for decades, all acting beyond their powers and also know that there is no way they are capable of selling their ill-gained powers upon us all by coming to us the people and coming clean about their intentional wrong doing. It is because of the dilemma they are all in that necessitates the push to turn this Nation into a Republic, thereby, we the people unwittingly giving them the powers to rewrite the constitution and cover their unconstitutional transgressions of the past. This being a political action they must pursue vigorously and expeditiously, before it is too late.

Stay very awake people, for the future has a plan and if you do not listen, learn and look and by virtue, be informed, then perhaps your last democratic vote may not achieve the future for your children that you aspire to leave them with.

Pratt demands to know Firelink replacement

The ACT opposition is demanding the government explain what will replace the Firelink mobile communications system which was dumped by the Emergency Services Agency last month.

Shadow emergency services minister Steve Pratt said the community needed to know before the start of the 2007/08 bushfire season.

"Post January 2003 and on the back of McLeod Report recommendations, the Stanhope government... appropriated a total of $27 million to realise these objectives," he said.

"What has changed?"

"What the ACT taxpayer is left with is an enormous waste of money, $4.5 million and no adequate mobile data and vehicle locating communication system in sight for front line bushfire fighting vehicles."

Mr Pratt said the government was obliged to inform the community about what would replace Firelink.

Federal Independent aspirant for Monaro - ACACIA ROSE

An open letter.

The seat of Eden Monaro is said to be the litmus of Federal elections. Sitting member Garry Nairn secretary of state to the Prime Minister (tongue in cheek), is being challenged in the next elections by independent, Acacia Rose. Daughter of Alec Costin, the Godfather of the no graze policy for the now burnt out Snowy Mountains, a heritage gutted of wildlife and wildflowers. 2-3M hectares of dead forests, ripped off top-soil, eroded streams, burnt out bogs and almost dry dams, leaving a pending, potential national water and electricity crisis.

Only 200 000 ha of grazed Snowy Mountain brumby runs survived the 2003-06-07 bushfires that ravaged Melbourne to Canberra. While no one can be blamed for the work of their parents, many knowledgeable, lateral thinking people wonder how you, Acacia Rose, rationalize your father's work of advocating the no graze, no cool fire regime in conjunction with the events of recent years. Seeing the elimination of so many of the values stockmen and Aboriginal people held so dear, nurtured and protected for generations with lives of hard work and participation in world wars.

Can you Acacia, tell the people whom you are asking to cast their vote for you along with the wider national constituency interest, how you rationalize this parental history from your Father's side with your own views and beliefs for the Snowy communities futures?

As I stated above, a child cannot be held accountable for their parent's actions, but you Acacia to be seriously considered as a Federal politician for the Monaro area and to have a voice in parliament for all other areas, we the people, wish sincerely to hear your answers. Especially, as this is an election period for you as a prospective Monaro candidate.

To put into context many of our concerns, generalizing, I outline below where Alec Costin scientifically appears to have led the snowy, down. I repeat, this is his, Alec Costin's, legacy to the Snowy, not Acacia Roses'.

The mountainous rebound of wildflowers when stock were removed finally in 1969, were a legacy of what wildflower growth conditions and mixed species grazing created. Never since, have such wildflowers been seen. The mountains have been stripped of their life's blood, yet her father's monographs of photos claiming the wildflowers - sown and fertilized by livestock grazing, protected from rabbit plague, drought and harsh bushfire by Snowy communities - were his work of salvation. This is unequivocally a serious misrepresentation of the facts and truth.

Alec Costin advocated large animal grazing be removed and cool fire management stopped. This, the very lifeblood of the Snowy, cut off! Since stockmen and their historic management were removed, the wildflowers have progressively disappeared and the wildlife has all but been eliminated by being starved, butchered and burnt. Costin clearly must have had tacit approval for harboring packs of wild dogs to discourage all grazing.

He wanted many tons of dry matter on the ground to deliver quality water, tons beyond what the Snowy environment could sustain and survive ecologically. A dry matter and thick scrub that killed and starved the wildlife and wildflowers and when the summer lightening came, the ensuing fires were uncontrollably intense and massive, burning huge geographical areas almost beyond recovery. There can be no doubt in many modern mountain minds that the Costin research conclusions, set in train processes with indelible results, for wildlife, wildflower and, water run-off. The culmination of these processes being the horror fires of 2003-06-07 even though unheeded warnings were given then and continued through the decades, right up to the days of the BBQs. There are numerous mountain people that had personal interaction with Costin and his field work, that after the seeing and the talking, wrote publicly of the folly of the man and his methods.

While children of early last century's Australian societal elite were enjoying the spoils of affluence and privilege, children of the snowy communities were being publicly castigated for being environmental heathens. The real facts are, Snowy families in a newly Federated nation were the first to talk with pride of their environmental awareness and commitment to our new modern nation. Employing a multicultural land management system to create and protect the conservation icon, which in turn became a pristine water catchment for all, called affectionately "The Snowy". Generational historically proven knowledge was dismissed, for so called flawed science pumped out on agenda by such as Alec Costin and those misguided enough to follow.

Large animal grazing had been reintroduced for over 150 years with great success after a mega-fauna absence of 12,000 years. Aboriginal burning had been in place in concert with diminishing mega-fauna grazing for up to 70,000 years. Our myriad of native flowering plants had evolved with large grazing animals and fire for 130 Million years. Aboriginal cool fire management is said to mimic grazing in its effects on plant communities, driving their life cycles, nutrient recycling of biochar. This cool burning was a skill developed by the Aboriginals as they suffered the effects upon the environment from the slow demise of the Australian mega-fauna.

The soil, plants, animals and streams, loved the return of large animal grazing and wildlife population recovery. Passed on Aboriginal management processes enabled the colonists to retain the ecology with the choice of mixed species grazing and cool frequent fire. In retrospect, the ideal vegetation structure and water relationships. The very essence of "The Snowy" with the ability to rapidly recover from bushfire.

Take a look at the legacy of Costin's processes in the fire recovery 4 years on from the 2003 holocaust. Alpine ash forests killed and intentionally left to rot, ancient snow gum stands killed, minimal wildlife such as insects, frogs, birds, lizards, echidna, wallaby, roos, wombats, and wildflowers, struggle to be seen outside park's rural neighbours. Nutrient recycling essentials for ancient 250 million year old soils to support a live ground cover, herbal water filters, have been incinerated and possibly lost forever over vast alpine areas.

When Myxomatosis was finally released in the 1950s to help stockmen restore full control over rabbits, and the wild dog population was reined in for the first time in 3,500 years by competent Dogmen, wildlife populations recovered, with the Snowy blossoming with abundant native species and reliable flows of fresh, clean, sweet water bubbling from every ferny gully, every year, all year, irrespective of rainfall.

Stockmen and their stock had created heaven on earth, but Alec Costin was an opportunist, taking photographs and claiming rabbit plague, 1939 scorch, gold mining, etc. was evidence of livestock damage to appease his masters in the Snowy Hydro and Commonwealth bureaucracies. Sam Clayton, empire builder in the Soil Conservation Service, was Costin's mentor. Stockmen shared their huts, horses, hospitality and dreams for a new nation with Alec Costin, who then went off and misrepresented them to the world. Basically, fed them to the dogs, burnt their farms, gutted their communities.

Today, Hume sawmill workers are facing the sack because all their forests have been locked up and burnt by ill-conceived policies. Farmers are locked out of their mountains during the worst drought since Snowy was declared a State Park in 1944, only to watch their generational family's life's work, burn down while being arrogantly and simplistically attributed to the untenable diatribe of "climate change". The truth is another matter altogether, a truth where the reality is the madness of management by abandonment, neglect and false science. The continuation and perpetuation of misleading and deceiving science has been fed to the public and has been done so for over 60 years in an effort to grab and exploit Snowy waters and terrain for very little return.

Stockmen, when they vacated their cherished summer runs were promised the wildlife, wildflowers, Snowy water would be looked after for the Australian people. How hollow were the promises? From a scientist's point of view, I blush with embarrassment for what has been called "Science on Snowy ecology!" The satellite maps seen by the world of The Snowy burning, are a national embarrassment. Snowy water turned to soot and brumby blood, a national disgrace, a blight by the elite few upon the naïve and lied to many.

Our brumbies built this nation with their loyalty and heart. They fought and died with our grandfathers, uncles, brothers, fathers and husbands, while politics and empire building at home was discreetly being conducted behind the scenes in an unconscionable act of selling out their country men. The brumbies are the free spirits of our Snowy families and loved ones who never returned. Had our families known of the within fifth column enemy of the Snowy here at home, they would likely never have left to fight and die on foreign shores. They certainly wouldn't have murdered their steeds on command.

Brumby grazing is all that is left to preserve what remains of The Snowy from the horrors of water catchment holocaust. The brumbies now rhetorically demonised, are truly targeted for extermination so as to erase the evidence of that which is claimed to be climate change, which in fact and reality, is about the failure of the no graze, no cool fire policy delivered by Alec Costin & Co's flawed, misleading science.

Acacia Rose your big job starts here if you seriously want our, the Snowy votes! Only in Australia would you be given this chance to prove yourself. A chance I will defend to the hilt for you to have. Democratic and political integrity has taken a tumble in Snowy politics for decades, a Snowy where political agendas and poor science have led us to the brink.

Acacia, convince us publicly, you recognize the incredible errors of the past that were bestowed upon the Snowy Mountains and its inhabitants.

Great Country This Australia

It's not often that Wellington Shire (Gippsland, Vic) really upsets me but they are doing it in Spades right now.

During the course of this year, the township of Licola has done it really tough.

DSE Fire crews fighting fires to the north of the town were removed so that back burning could take place around the Thomson Reservoir, Melbourne's largest dam.

The fires descended on Licola and did a lot of damage. The experienced fire fighters resident in Licola put up a good defence but, damage was done. One body of opinion suggests that DSE tried to burn them out. That may be a bit far fetched but that is what is in the minds of some of the residents.

Because the fires had burned with intense heat the forest floors were not JUST cremated, the soils, where they weren't eroded became hydrophobic.

In February, a short sharp cloudburst falling on hydrophobic land washed ash and burned earth in a huge mudslide that roared down Target Creek carrying all before it. It did further damage to Licola township. It took weeks for their store to recover and reopen.

Later, in June, more rain falling on hydrophobic surfaces turned into a huge flood that eroded the Macalister River banks, washing away a number of school camps and a huge proportion of the Lions Village.

The area was cut off from the rest of us. Bridges were washed away, buttresses damaged and for a long time access to Licola was by permit only across a treacherous, slippery 4WD track over Mt Useful.

On Monday 27th August Wellington Shire is holding a meeting of interested stakeholders to discuss the future of the township. Factors that disturb Licola residents are;

A timber plantation company has been invited to attend despite their being no timber plantation in the area.

The media have been informed that the meeting is closed to them.

Craig Ingram, MLA for this electorate has not been invited.

Shire Councillors have been kept in the dark. There has been a suggestion that they have received the mushroom treatment.

All this has happened because Melbourne Governments since 1982 have seriously and shamefully neglected their duty to properly manage fuel loads on public land across the State. Having been told to "lock it up and leave it" Ministers of all Governments in the last 25 years have seriously reduced manpower and funding across rural Victoria.

I have the statistics that prove my statement. They have been obtained from the National Parks Act, Annual Reports of 1982 and 2005.

Until such time as Governments in Victoria utterly reject the Greens method of mis management of our remote public lands, I will not be silenced.

John Cribbes

To Be, or Not to Be Sovereign

The price of free trade labelled as globalisation and the future risks for Australia should this nation continue down the path of Australian domestic rural destruction are starting to become patently clear to even the most apathetic members of our Country.

Click on the below URL to read just how risky imports can be, and how fledgling, albeit massive, new world global free trading entrants can risk the health and well being of not just third world countries, but also 1st world nations seeking cheap product and produce over more expensive, but proven home grown supplies.

A Nation's sovereignty and hence borders are a bastion of strength against outside forces. Influences that at best, detract from the success and well being, economically and socially and at worst, such influences could cause an unsuspecting, unguarded sovereign nation to collapse.

Trade is and has always been a necessary endeavour of human evolvement, but free trade touted as globalisation is nothing other than a way for corporations bent on profits to circumvent the very safe guards and processes put in place by a nation to protect the sovereign nation's political ideals, culture and citizen's well being. The very essence of being a proud citizen, of that Nation.

Most of us personally all have insurance for many things, we have children inoculated for possible diseases etc, we attempt to accrue a bank balance for a rainy day. All things designed to be pro-active, yet under the free trade globalisation banner we have thrown the baby out with the bath water and are increasingly leaving sovereign security in the position of only being able to be, re-active. A very dangerous path indeed for any nation to consider, let alone be in, as our politicians have done for us here in Australia today.

Check the labels on the tinned food you buy at the supermarkets. Especially the product directed towards the lower socio-economic groups of our Australian society, the battlers.
