SPECIAL VIC FARMERS EDITION

1080 Bait Registration Due NOW..

SOS-NEWS Special is for Victorian Farmers and Dog affected Land-owners

Do not let this opportunity to register here for death baits go by, do it now. If baits are going to be sold in the shops as a restricted retail product, it will be necessary for as many of you guys and gals that wish to eradicate this mongrel, feral scourge from the Victorian bush, to do so now. Don't procrastinate, just bloody well do it.

It sort of reminds of the prohibition era in the US, cross border running was effective until Elliot Ness came on the scene.

Time running out to organise 1080 bait training

The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is reminding farmers the deadline to register for 1080 bait training is looming.

The closing date for registrations is August 24.

The chairman of the VFF agricultural chemicals committee, Geoff Kendell, says the training is open to anyone with a valid agricultural chemical user permit.

He says the training allows farmers easier access to fresh baits, including 1080-laced baits soon to be available from retail outlets.

"Once they've done that, it then allows them to be able to ... pick up liver baits and also carrot baits that they've really badly needed over the last few years," he said.

"The actual dry baits that we were using weren't doing the job in trying to combat foxes and wild dogs and also rabbits."

August 24 deadline for 1080 courses - Sykes

Monday, 6 August 2007

Nationals Member for Benalla, Bill Sykes, today reminded future 1080 bait users that there was just two weeks left to register for free accreditation courses.

He said Agricultural Chemical User Permit (ACUP) licence holders must register with DPI for a free half-day training course by August 24. Later training will be on an as-needs basis for a fee.

Under changes to the scheme, landholders must be 1080-accredited to continue use of the chemical when sales are opened up to private enterprise on January 1.

"1080 baits are a major weapon in controlling feral rabbit and fox populations. I was very pleased with my fox control program this year. In conjunction with Fox-Off, the use of alpacas and the fox bounty I had excellent fox control during lambing at my property", Dr Sykes said.

"It's essential that people intending to continue use of 1080 baits register for this course so that they are accredited to distribute the baits for vital pest management control.

"Users will be able to purchase perishable baits such as 1080-laced liver and carrot baits to control rabbits and foxes as well as the current oat and Fox-Off baits from next year."

Dr Sykes said he registered last week and was advised that some scheduled courses were over subscribed but DPI were recording names and were planning to run more courses to cope with extra demand.

Courses currently scheduled include:

Benalla DPI, 89 Sydney Rd October 8, 1pm

October 9, 9am

Seymour GO TAFE, Wallis Street September 27, 5.30pm

Dr Sykes concluded, "I encourage landholders to contact the DPI bait hotline on 1300 10 1080 to register their interest in the free sessions being held in various locations across Victoria from September to November 2007.

More information about the 1080 baiting regulations can be obtained from www.dpi.vic.gov.au/1080.
